The air outside was tomato-sweet and hickory-smoked, all at once delicious and strange.
This book has a lot of really, strangely lovely descriptions. And I say "strangely lovely" because the words don't seem like they would fit together to describe the subjects they're targeting.
But I love them! Somehow, they work.
An elderly man with coin-silver hair walked out, ducking under the archway to avoid hitting his head. He was fantastically tall and walked with a rigid gait, his legs like stilts. He seemed badly constructed, like a skyscraper made of soft wood instead of concrete. He looked like he could splinter at any moment.
Upstairs, she found a long hallway that smelled woolly and tight.
She was willow-branch thin, had a cap of yellow hair, and a sad sort of vulnerability was wafting from her, making the night smell like maple syrup.
She had to quickly turn away. Staring at an Alexander man too long was like staring at the sun. The image became imprinted. You could close your eyes and still see him.
I'm very intrigued by these descriptions, and being that this book is supernatural/magical realism as well, it makes me a little curious about Julia because she's already used a specific smell to describe something you normally wouldn't use smell to describe--for instance, in the above quotes, how she describes Emily standing on her mother's balcony.
Anyway, the first chapter is already quite interesting, with all the conflicts already being brought out in the open. I hadn't expected the book to dive into the heart of the story so quickly, but this book isn't very long, so I'm only slightly surprised.
I'm very much looking forward to reading the rest of this.
