First Impression: Written In Red @ Chapt. 1

Written In Red
by Anne Bishop
Book 1 of The Others

Well that was a rather bloody and gory first chapter.  I'm not sure if I expected that or not.

Although despite the blood and gore, I'm already kind of hooked.  The terminology and the lay of the world doesn't seem too hard to follow along with.  I'm not entirely certain I know what the setting is, but I'm sure I'll figure it out as the book progresses.  It's kind of nice that, aside from that first "prologue" of a history lesson that sounded more like a mythological tale, there aren't too many infodumps.

The characters have yet to really stand out, but we are only in chapter one.  So far, the best part of the book is the intensity of Meg's dangerous situation.  I can feel the tension rolling off of her, thick.

I don't know what to make of Simon or Tess yet.

And we've got a death prophecy and everything, too.  I've got a feeling I'm going to enjoy this book.
